Methodist High School, Ibadan was
founded in February 1961 with Mr. J.O. Odeyale
as the first principal assisted by Mr. G.A. Osibowale
now Rev. G.A. Osibowale. Later, Mr. M.A. Adepoju,
now Chief M.A Adepoju, the third teacher, was
appointed.
The enrolment at foundation was 56. The school
took off temporarily at Chief J.S.K. Osibodu’s
(alias Kitoyi) premises along old Lagos/Ijebu-ode
road.
Mr. G.A Osibowale was the house master because
all the students were boarders. He was also a
class teacher, chaplain and game master. The fourth
teacher, Mr. Adelabu joined the staff of the school
later in the year.
Every Sundays, the students used to trek from
the school to Agbeni Methodist Church for Sunday
service. The church, being the Proprietor of the
school, used to make special collection on Sundays
towards the physical development of the school.
As soon as the permanent site was bought, a block
of six-classrooms was put up and the students
were being led everyday from the temporary site
to the permanent site by Mr. G.A. Osibowale. Between
1962 and 1975, some of the students who were Scouts
had the opportunity of attending World Scouts
Jamborees in America, Greece, Scotland, Japan
and Norway. Among them were Mr. Leke Adepeju,
Mr. Israel Ajayi, Mr Davidson Okafor, now Dr.
Okafor, and Mr. Yinka Osibowale. Mr. Olunuga,
now Dr. Olunuga attended World meeting of the
Boys Brigade in Scotland.
Among the teachers were Rev. O. Omodunbi, now
a retired Arch Bishop of Lagos Arch Diocese, Mr.
Felix Ohiwerei, Late Mr. M.O. Sodola, Mr. Awoseyi,
Late Mr. A. Sosanya – Alias Aristo, Mr.
Ogundiran, Mr. I.A Osunbunmi and many others.
The first Chairman of the Board of Governors of
the school was the Late Rev. N.O. Salako.
The school has produced a lot of men who are to
be reckoned with in the history of Nigeria.
